Collection consists of a copy of the constitution of the general, district and local assemblies, 1901, 92 pages; charters for the Knights of Hope Assembly, Port Hope, 1882 and the Standard Assembly, Brantford, 1885, photocopies, 2 pages; the Knights of Labor collection of the Wisconsin State Historical Society, including general assembly proceedings and constitutions of the general, district and local assemblies, 1878-1913, microfilm, 11 reels; and the personal papers of T.V. Powderly, general master workman of the Knights of Labor, 1879-1883 and John W. Hayes, Secretary-Treasurer, 1888-1902, microfilm, 109 reels, M-3676 to M-3686, M-4295 to M-4403.

Knights of Labour : The Order of the Knights of Labour was perhaps the most important labour union in North America during the nineteenth century. In Canada, it flourished during the early 1880s, when more than 400 Local Assemblies were established in cities and towns from Halifax to Nanaimo. However, the Order was strongest in the most industrialized provinces of Ontario and Quebec. All but two of the eighteen District Assemblies formed in Canada were located in central Canada. As occurred in the United States, the Knights declined rapidly in Canada after 1887, although it remained a substantial force in many centres until well into the first decade of the twentieth century.

The main reason for the success of the Order was its all-inclusive philosophy and industrial form of organization which embraced unskilled workers and women as well as craftsmen. Not only an economic tool for its members, the Knights of Labour was a movement of considerable political, social and cultural significance in late Victorian Canada.

General note:

The collection was assembled from a variety of sources. A photograph of the 1882 charter was received from Dr. Fred Landon in 1962 and that of the 1885 charter from the Canadian Labour Congress in 1976. Microfilm of General Assembly Proceedings, journal and miscellaneous items were received from the Wisconsin State Historical Society in 1975. Microfilm of the Powderly and Hayes papers were received from the Microfilming Corporation of America in 1975.
