Travelogue documenting a voyage by officers of the Department of the Interior on the motor-powered schooner Medico, from Slave River and Great Slave Lake to Herschel Island in the Beaufort Sea in July 1930. Footage includes: views on board ship and of settlements and sites along the shore, including trading posts, a Government medical station, detachment of RCMP, Anglican and Roman Catholic missions, and Fort Resolution Residence, Fort Resolution, N.W.T. (also known as St. Joseph's Convent or Residential School was managed by the Oblate Missionaries of Mary Immaculate that closed in 1957) for Chipewyan Indigenous children of the Dene Nation (Indian); bushfire from the river's edge; Fort Resolution on Great Slave Lake; Fort Providence; Fort Simpson; Fort Norman; Imperial Oil's "Discovery" well; the ramparts of the lower Mackenzie; Shingle Point; and Herschel Island, and with an animated map showing ports of call along the way. Also included are: several views of Inuvialuit children at school, playing bat and ball, posing for the camera, and approaching a Fairchild floatplane, boarded by Major L.T. Burwash and G.H. Blanchet going onto Great Slave Lake to a region containing deposits of copper, silver, gold and radium; a halt is made at a spot nine miles downstream where, in 1921, an oil strike started a stampede into the Mackenzie District and ruins still in place; female teachers and Inuvialuit children at the Shingle Point Indian Residential School, Shingle Point, Yukon (was an Anglican Residential School opened in 1927 and a predecessor to the Aklavik Residential School. The Shingle Point school moved to Aklavik in 1934 due to overcrowding); the fifty year old skeleton wreck of the whaler Penelope amongst driftwood; Herschel Island, once a famous whaling base, now the annual headquarters of fur-traders; Inuvialuit schooners from Banks Island and points on the mainland coast cluster here to dispose of their year's catch of foxes; the Hudson's Bay Company Baychimo that ran from Vancouver to the Arctic, and which sank soon after; Patsy Wyant's wedding to an Inuvialuit woman - the newlyweds are wearing finely crafted parkas; Royal North West Mounted Police (RNWMP) and Inuvialuit special constable? feeding dogs from fish collected in a wheelbarrow. <12mn 55s>
