Fonds consists of correspondence, memoranda, speeches, newspaper articles, minutes of meetings, resolutions and photographs. They concern the history of the C.P.U. prepared by I.N. Smith, annual conference and general meetings held in London each year, general conferences in the Union of South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Canada, India and Pakistan, the West Indies, the Mediterranean, and the business of the Canadian section. Notable subjects include C.P.U. attempts to preserve freedom of the press in the Commonwealth, the penny press cable rate, the Vassal case concerning the right of journalists to keep their sources secret and press ethics concerning the reporting of terrorism.

Fonds also consists of one photograph depicting Canadian delegates to the Commonwealth Press Union Conference in Trinidad, 1956.

Commonwealth Press Union : The Commonwealth Press Union (C.P.U.) was founded in 1909 by Sir Harry Brittain as the Empire Press Union to enable the editors and newspaper publishers of the British Empire to broaden imperial knowledge and understanding.

Annual conferences and general meetings are held in London every spring where the office is located. General conferences in different Commonwealth countries were held every five years until 1961, after which date they have been held every four years. The C.P.U. has been particularly active in its attempts to preserve press freedom, improving facilities for Commonwealth correspondents in the United Kingdom and in the training of journalists.
