Independent Labor Party of Manitoba. Centre Winnipeg Branch : The establishment of the Independent Labor Party (ILP) of Manitoba in December 1920 was the result of an ideological split within the Dominion Labor Party which was the Manitoba section of the Canadian Labor Party. Socialists and One Big Union supporters like F.J. Dixon, S.J. Farmer, W.D. Bayley and William Ivens withdrew from the party that they had helped to establish in 1918 when it became obvious that it was falling under the control of conservative craft unionists.

Starting with seventy-one members, the ILP of Manitoba eventually established several branches in Greater Winnipeg, as well as branches in other urban centres in the province. J.S. Woodsworth joined the North Branch on his return to Winnipeg in June 1921 and in December of that year he successfully contested the federal election as an Independent Labor Party candidate in the Winnipeg North Centre constituency. The party engaged in municipal politics as well as in the dominion and provincial spheres.

In 1929, the ILP was largely responsible for calling the Western Conference of Labour Parties which set afoot the unity movement among western radical labour and farm groups that culminated in the founding of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation in 1932. Within the new confederation the Independent Labor Party fought to preserve its unique identity long after many of the founding groups had given up their independent status.
