St. Lawrence Hall (Montreal, Quebec) : The St. Lawrence Hall, a hotel situated at the corner of Great St. James and St. Francois Xavier Streets in Montreal, was opened in 1851. For some years it was the city's largest hotel, being situated in what was then the shopping, business and theatre district. The British forces in Canada maintained headquarters there and during the American Civil War the Confederate Commissioners were quartered in the hotel. Royal and vice-regal visitors to Montreal were accommodated there. The proprietor, Henry Hogan, managed the hotel from its opening until his death in 1902. The hotel continued to operate under the management of his estate until about 1909.
